EDUCATOR NOTES

How to use
this activity.

What’s inside

  • Educator guide with size-comparison goals, flexible participation ideas and an adult answer key
  • Four pairs of matching pumpkins or ghosts with directions to find the big or small picture
  • Creation page with big and small spaces for two sizes of the same Halloween picture

Gather a few things

  • Printed pages
  • Pencil, crayons or washable markers

Try it together

  1. 1

Show one pair on page 2 and compare only the two pictures in that box.

  2. 2

Read the direction aloud, emphasizing big or small. Invite the learner to point to, circle or mark the matching picture.

  3. 3

Try one pair or all four. Compare each new pair on its own; color is not a clue.

  4. 4

On page 3, choose a pumpkin, ghost or another Halloween picture. Make the same picture twice, one big and one small. Draw, make marks or tell an adult what to add.

  5. 5

Point to the big picture and then the small picture. The drawings do not need to be perfect; explore the sizes together.

  6. 6

Adult key for page 2: 1 is the big pumpkin on the right; 2 is the small ghost on the right; 3 is the big ghost on the left; 4 is the small pumpkin on the left.

Make it your way

  • Cover the other pairs and name both sizes while pointing to them.
  • Use your hands to show the size difference. Let the learner choose a size first, then find it within the pair.
  • Accept looking, pointing, words, gestures or adult-recorded choices. Drawing and independent reading are not required; pause or skip any step.
  • For more challenge, describe the same pair using bigger and smaller, or make another pair with a different picture. Continue comparing within each pair.

Participation can mean making, choosing, observing or directing a partner.
