EDUCATOR NOTES

How to use
this activity.

What’s inside

  • Educator guide with counting goals and flexible participation ideas
  • Five pumpkin groups with numeral choices from 1 to 5
  • Four open pumpkin patches with spaces for an adult to record chosen numbers

Gather a few things

  • Printed activity pages
  • Crayons, pencils or washable markers
  • Optional: large counters or stickers, used with adult supervision

Try it together

  1. 1

Explore one pumpkin group together. Touch or point to each pumpkin as you count.

  2. 2

Say, point to or circle the number that matches the group.

  3. 3

On the creation page, choose a number from 1 to 5 for a patch. Draw pumpkins, make marks or place large counters to show that many.

  4. 4

Count the new group together. An adult can write the chosen number. Try one patch or all four.

Make it your way

  • Start with groups of 1 or 2. Cover extra rows and offer two number choices.
  • Count together; an adult can point or move a counter for each pumpkin.
  • Accept looking, pointing, words, gestures or adult-recorded choices. Pause or skip any step; no finished page is required.
  • For more challenge, make two groups with the same number, compare more and fewer, or try a different number in each patch.

Participation can mean making, choosing, observing or directing a partner.
