  • Pencil, crayon or washable marker

Try it together

  2. 2

Repeat the mark in its large box, or use the blank box for a new texture.

  3. 3

Draw a big shape in the artwork frame and fill it with one or more textures.

  4. 4

Invite the learner to compare marks by looking, describing or pointing.

Make it your way

  • Keep this a dry drawing activity, with no extra materials to touch.
  • Offer a smooth drawing surface, a familiar tool and a choice to stop or pause.
  • Use large, widely spaced marks or ask an adult to draw a selected mark.
  • Extend the activity with contrasting textures inside different shapes.

Participation can mean making, choosing, observing or directing a partner.
